My Mum wrote hundreds of poems some of which are on the flash drive I found. One of them was about a local statue 'The Burton Cooper' situated in the centre of Coopers Square Shopping Centre. When she wrote the poem it was outdoors in its original location outside the shop which is now Primark, She was also a keen amateur artist and drew a sketch to go with it.
All In The Blink of an Eye
(The Burton Cooper)
His fist is raised eternally in the air
The vein on his arm
A silent witness to the strength
That grasps the hammer
Imagination puts real feet
In the bronze boots
Forever still, yet ready to move
There! Did you see?
All in the blink of an eye
Any minute he will straighten his back
Take from his head, the cap
The symbol of his station in life
And with that same hand
Mop the sweat from his brow
Let you and I sit and watch, quietly
Did his apron flap in the wind?
There! Did you see?
All in the blink of an eye
Feel the ache in his back
The heavy boots on his feet
Feel them burn in the heat of summer
Just take a minute to look and watch
Don’t dare to look away
Or the hammer will drop and the hoop
That circles the barrel
Will be knocked into place
All in the blink of an eye
